The Ultimate Guide to Dry Shampoo

The Ultimate Guide to Dry Shampoo

At pro Do Blow Dry Bar, we know that sometimes, washing your hair just isn’t in the cards. Whether you’re running late, squeezing in a workout, or simply don’t have time for the full shampoo-and-blow-dry routine, dry shampoo is a total lifesaver. If you’ve been curious about how to make it work for you, we’ve got you covered! Here’s everything you need to know about dry shampoo and why PHD Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo is our best-selling choice.

Why You Should Use Dry Shampoo

So why should you even consider using dry shampoo? It’s not just for those days when you don’t want to wash your hair (though it’s perfect for that, too). Dry shampoo works wonders in a few key ways:

  • It Helps You Go Longer Between Washes: If you don’t want to shampoo every day, dry shampoo will be a total game-changer. It soaks up oils and keeps your hair looking fresh, so you don’t have to wash it every morning. It’s a total time-saver.
  • It Adds Volume: Not only does it refresh your hair, but it also gives your hair that much-needed lift. If you’ve got fine or flat hair, dry shampoo is a fantastic way to add some texture and body.
  • It Saves Time: We get it – mornings can be hectic! Dry shampoo is the perfect quick fix for those days when you need to save time. A couple of spritzes, and you’re good to go.
  • It’s Better for Your Hair: Washing your hair too often can strip it of its natural oils, which can lead to dryness and damage. Dry shampoo helps you reduce the number of washes you do, which means your hair stays healthier longer.

When to Use Dry Shampoo

Now that you know why dry shampoo is a must-have, let’s talk about when to use it.

  • When your hair starts to look greasy or feel flat: Dry shampoo is perfect when you’re in between washes. If your hair starts to feel greasy but you’re not quite ready for a full shampoo session, it’ll absorb that oil and refresh your hair.
  • After a Workout: We know that post-workout hair can be a bit… well, less than fresh. Dry shampoo is the perfect solution for absorbing sweat and giving your hair a little refresh without a full wash.
  • In the Morning When You’re Running Late: We’ve all had those mornings where we just need a little more time in bed. Dry shampoo is your secret weapon for making your hair look like you spent way more time on it than you actually did.
  • Before Bed: Pro tip: Spray dry shampoo in your hair before bed. By the time you wake up, your hair will be fresh and ready to go without all the grease.

How to Use Dry Shampoo

Okay, now for the good stuff – how to actually use dry shampoo! It’s super easy, but we’ve got a few tips to make sure you get the best results.

  1. Shake the Can: Always give your Dry Shampoo a good shake before using it. This helps distribute the product evenly and ensures you get all the benefits.
  2. Section Your Hair: Part your hair into sections. This step isn’t necessary, but it helps you apply the product more precisely, targeting those oily spots.
  3. Spray liberally 6–8 inches from the roots: Hold the can about 6-8 inches from your roots and spray it directly onto the areas that need a little help (usually the roots and crown).
  4. Let It Sit for a Minute: Give it a minute to let the dry shampoo absorb oils. If you’re in a rush, don’t worry – it doesn’t take long to start working.
  5. Massage It In: Use your fingers to rub it into your scalp. You can also brush your hair through to make sure it’s evenly distributed.
  6. Style as Usual: Once your hair is looking fresh, you can style it however you like. Whether you’re going for volume, sleekness, or a tousled look, dry shampoo helps set the stage.

The Ultimate Guide to Heat Protection

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on heat protection for your hair. In this blog, we’ll delve into why using heat protectant is important, practical tips for application, and the best products to use. We’ve got all the information you need to keep your hair healthy and vibrant!

Why is Heat Protection Important?

Heat protection products are made to shield your hair from the heat of styling tools like blow dryers, flat irons, and curling wands. They work by coating your hair’s cuticle, creating a protective layer to reduce moisture loss and prevent heat damage. Using them is crucial, especially if you use hot tools often, to keep your hair healthy.

Additionally, they not only guard against high temperatures but also offer extra benefits like UV protection, making them essential for your hair care routine.

Heat Protection Spray on hair cuticle layer

Tips for Using Heat Protectants Effectively

  • Ensure your hot tools are set to a temperature between 350-400°F to minimize heat damage.
  • Apply heat protectant evenly throughout your hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends where heat styling is most concentrated.
  • Don’t forget to reapply heat protectant if you’re restyling or touching up your hair throughout the day.

How to Apply Heat Protection on Wet Hair:

If you prefer to apply heat protection to your hair while it’s still wet before blow drying, here’s our recommended method for using a heat protectant product on wet hair.

  1. Towel Dry: After washing your hair, gently towel dry it to remove excess water. Your hair should be damp but not dripping wet.

  2. Apply Heat Protectant: Take a small amount of heat protectant product and evenly distribute it through your hair. Start from the mid-lengths to the ends, as these areas are more prone to damage from heat styling.

  3. Comb Through: Use a wide-tooth comb to evenly distribute the heat protectant throughout your hair. This ensures that every strand is coated for maximum protection.

  4. Style as Desired: Once the heat protectant is applied, you can proceed to style your hair using heat styling tools as usual. The protectant will create a barrier between your hair and the heat, reducing the risk of damage.

  5. Finish with Styling Products: If desired, you can finish your style with additional styling products such as hairspray or serum to add hold or shine. Make sure these products are compatible with heat styling and won’t counteract the effects of the heat protectant.

Our Favorite Heat Protection Products for Wet Hair

Living Proof Perfecting Spray

Restore Perfecting Spray moisturizes, smooths, and strengthens dry, damaged hair, all while providing dependable heat protection up to 450°F/232°C. Enjoy instant hydration, minimize breakage during wet detangling, and admire the silky, shiny finish it leaves behind. How to Apply Heat Protection on Dry Hair:

  1. Prepare Hair: Ensure your hair is completely dry before applying the heat protectant. If necessary, use a blow dryer on a low or cool setting to dry your hair thoroughly.

  2. Divide Hair: Divide your hair into sections to ensure even application of the heat protectant. You can use clips or hair ties to separate the sections.

  3. Dispense Product: Shake the heat protectant bottle well, then spray or pump a small amount of product into your hand. The amount will vary depending on the length and thickness of your hair, but start with a small amount and add more if needed.

  4. Apply to Hair: Rub the heat protectant between your palms to evenly distribute it, then gently run your hands through each section of hair, focusing on the mid-lengths to ends. Make sure to avoid applying too much product at the roots, as this can weigh down the hair.

  5. Comb Through: Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to comb through each section of hair to ensure the heat protectant is evenly distributed.

  6. Style as Desired: Once the heat protectant is applied, you can proceed to style your hair using heat styling tools such as flat irons or curling wands. The protectant will create a barrier between your hair and the heat, reducing the risk of damage.

Fall-Proof Your Hair: How to Maintain Healthy Hair in the Fall

As the leaves change color and the temperature drops, it’s not just your wardrobe that needs an update; your hair care routine should also transition to accommodate the changing seasons. Fall can be harsh on your hair, with cooler and drier weather causing potential damage and frizz. But fear not! With a few simple adjustments to your hair care routine, you can keep your locks looking vibrant and healthy throughout the autumn season.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate.

Fall weather often comes with lower humidity levels and drier conditions, especially in Utah. This can lead to dry and brittle hair. You can combat this by maintaining proper hydration both internally and externally. Drink plenty of water to keep your body and hair well-hydrated.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Healthy hair starts from the inside out. No matter the season, incorporating foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids into your diet is crucial. Foods like salmon, avocado, nuts, and leafy greens can promote hair health and prevent dryness and breakage.

Change-up Your Shampoo and Conditioner

As the weather changes, so should your hair care products. Swap out your lightweight summer products for richer, more nourishing options. Look for shampoos and conditioners that contain moisturizing ingredients like Jojoba EstersShea Butter, and Argon Oil. Additionally, you can add a deep conditioner treatment to your routine to give your hair an extra boost of hydration.

Get a Trim!

Regular trims are essential year-round, but they become even more beneficial during the fall. Trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks helps remove split ends and prevents them from traveling up the hair shaft, causing more significant damage. It also promotes healthier and more vibrant hair growth.

Hair Care Tips for Fall: Adjusting Your Routine to Prevent Damage and Frizz in Autumn

Combat Static and Frizz with Hair Oil

Hair oil can be a powerful ally in your battle against static and frizz, especially during the fall season. As the air becomes cooler and drier, our hair tends to lose moisture, which can lead to static electricity and those pesky frizzies. Applying a small amount of hair oil can work wonders. These oils act as a natural barrier, sealing in moisture and preventing the hair from absorbing excess humidity from the air. By adding a protective layer, they not only keep your hair hydrated but also reduce friction between individual strands, effectively taming static and leaving your locks looking smooth and sleek, even on the windiest fall days. Just remember, a little goes a long way, so start with a few drops and work it through your hair for a frizz-free, static-resistant finish.

Living Proof – No Frizz Vanishing Oil

A fast-absorbing oil that vanishes into strands to hydrate and block humidity, leaving hair smooth and shiny.

Taking care of your hair during the fall doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With these simple tips and adjustments to your hair care routine, you can ensure your locks remain luscious and vibrant throughout the season. Embrace the cozy and colorful days of autumn with healthy, gorgeous hair. 🧡

When Should You Wash Your Hair Twice?

Hair washing is an essential aspect of personal hygiene, and many people follow a regular hair-washing routine to maintain the cleanliness and health of their hair. However, there are times when one wash is not enough, and you may need to wash your hair twice to achieve optimal results.

How to wash your hair twice for optimal results:

  1. First Wash: Use a Clarifying Shampoo to loosen up product and oil buildup.
  2. Second Wash: Use a Shampoo tailored to your hair type to clean your scalp and hair shaft.
  3. Condition Your Hair: Use a Moisturizing Conditioner, apply midshaft to ends.

The decision to wash your hair twice should depend on several factors, including your hair type, your lifestyle, and your hair’s current condition. Here are some scenarios when you may need to wash your hair twice:

If You Go 3 or More Days Between Washing.

If you go 3 or more days between washes you could benefit from washing your hair twice. Depending on the level and nature of your daily activities, cleansing once will in most cases not fully clean out all of the buildup. Our hair collects product buildup, dust, dirt, sweat and oils. Cleansing twice will allow the buildup to wash away leaving your hair fresh and clean before conditioning.

If You use Dry Shampoo Regularly.

While dry shampoo is a convenient way to refresh your hair and absorb excess oil without the use of water, it’s important to understand that it does not actually clean your hair or scalp.

Dry shampoo works by absorbing oil and other impurities from your hair, which can build up over time if you rely on it too often. Washing your hair thoroughly is important for removing dirt, sweat, and buildup of oils and products from your hair and scalp. This can help prevent clogged hair follicles, scalp irritation, and even hair loss.

So even if you use dry shampoo, washing your hair twice at least every few days or as often as recommended by your hair type and lifestyle. This will ensure that your scalp and hair stay healthy and clean.

If Your Hair Gets Very Oily.

If your hair gets very oily, washing it twice can help to remove excess oil and buildup from your scalp and hair. The first wash will help to break down and remove the excess oil, dirt, and product buildup that can accumulate on your scalp and hair. The second wash allows the shampoo to fully penetrate your hair and scalp, ensuring that all traces of oil and buildup are removed.

However, it’s important not to over-wash your hair, as this can strip your hair and scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. The frequency with which you should wash your hair depends on your hair type, lifestyle, and individual needs.

If you have very oily hair, you may need to wash it more frequently than someone with dry hair. It’s also important to use a shampoo that’s formulated for your hair type and to avoid using too much conditioner or other hair products that can contribute to oil buildup.

In conclusion, washing your hair twice can be beneficial in certain situations, but it’s not necessary to do so every time you wash your hair. Pay attention to your hair’s condition and adjust your washing routine accordingly. With proper care and attention, you can maintain healthy and beautiful hair.

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

Here at pro Do blow dry bar we specialize in blowouts and hair styling and our clients often ask us “How often should I wash my hair?” There isn’t exactly one specific answer. It comes down to your hair type, your activity level, and personal preference.

How to Determine When to Wash Your Hair

Everyone’s hair type, style preferences, and lifestyles are different. If you work out and sweat everyday, telling you to wash your hair as little as possible just won’t fly. Or if you color your hair, telling to wash your hair more often may lead to fading your color faster. It’s important you take your own personal habits and preferences into consideration to find a hair washing schedule that works best for you. If you have a feeling that you want to or should wash your hair, then do it! It’s your hair — so it’s important you’re comfortable with how it looks and feels.

Why is Washing Your Hair Regularly Important?

Shampooing helps remove dirt, oil, debris, and odors effectively from the hair. Excess oil and product buildup plugs up the follicles and can slow your hair growth, not to mention making your hair look and feel dirty.

Scalp Massage Benefits

Your hair health starts from the roots. Scalp massages while washing your hair help reduce product buildup and remove dead skin cells, stimulating hair growth by promoting blood circulation. A regular scalp massage routine boosts your hair’s natural beauty by supporting the health of your scalp and hair. To level-up your scalp health game, follow a regular scalp regimen.

Hair Types

The type of hair you have will determine the type of care your hair may need and the products required to maintain your hairs health.

  • Fine hair: Fine hair tends to be more delicate and fragile on the ends and can become oily on the roots. If you have this hair type, shampoo more frequently on your roots with a gentle shampoo and moisturize the ends well. ANGEL.WASH is a volumizing shampoo that will nourish and transform fine, fragile hair to soft healthy locks. Use a light detangler that won’t weigh your hair down.
  • Coarse Hair: Coarse hair is porous, with more of an open cuticle, especially if it’s curly. Wash your hair less often and keep it moisturized. Use a shampoo and conditioner that’s rich in lipids, to give your course hair more shine and keep it elastic. SMOOTH.AGAIN.WASH. will nourish and refine thick, coarse hair, delivering all-over softness and a stronger, smoother, shinier-looking finish.
  • Oily Hair: If your hair often feels greasy in a few days, you may have oily hair. Shampoo when your hair feels like it’s getting oily and building up. Give your hair a much-needed detox with a detoxifying shampoo. MAXI.WASH removes the build-up of unwanted products and oils from the hair and helps to purify for a clean, clear and refreshed scalp. Maxi wash is meant to be a pre-shampoo so follow up with your favorite shampoo.
  • Colored Hair: If you color your hair, stick with color safe shampoos and conditioners. Living Proof Color Care Shampoo is a sulfate-free, silicone-free color care shampoo that gently cleanses, nourishes and protects against UV, hard water and damage (which can cause color fading).
  • Blonde Hair: If you bleach your hair or have blonde hair use repairing shampoo and conditioners. REPAIR-ME.WASH. helps restore damaged hair and enrich it with powerful proteins and amino acids. You can also add a purple shampoo to your routine that will help maintain your hair’s brightness. BLONDE.ANGEL.WASH. this color enhancing shampoo takes on all tones – from creamy to platinum, and helps brighten and rescue dull color. If your ends are dry or damaged apply a small amount of hair oil daily.

Now that we’ve shared our basic knowledge about hair care and washing, you get to decide whats best for you and for your hair ❤️

How to Prevent and Repair Chlorine Damaged Hair

What are the effects of chlorine on our hair and skin?

Chlorine is used in pools to protect us from waterborne illnesses and various skin infections. While it is overall a good thing to have in pools, it does have its drawbacks. Your hair needs its natural oils to remain smooth and healthy. Chlorine can remove these natural oils from your hair and skin, leaving them feeling dry and rough. It can also cause a chemical reaction in your hair, making your color dull and “green tinted”. Don’t worry though, because there are ways to protect your hair from chlorine and to repair damage.

How to prevent your hair from being damaged by pool water..

  1. Wear a swim cap or clip your hair up to keep it dry.
  2. If you do get your hair wet, rinse your hair right after swimming.
  3. Use a detangling spray on your hair before brushing.
  4. Comb your hair gently with a wide tooth comb when it’s wet/damp.

How to repair chlorine damage..

  1. Wash your hair with a Detox Shampoo. Kevin Murphy MAXI.WASH is a pro Do blow dry bar favorite and gentle enough to use on a regular basis. This detox shampoo removes build-up of unwanted products and chemicals from the hair with a soothing blend of essential oils that brightens the hair while purifying and balancing the scalp.

2. Use a Chlorine Remover. If your hair has already shown the signs of chlorine damage Malibu Swimmers is a treatment you can use at home or add on to your next blowout service. Simply add product to your shampoo to remove all the hair-harsh elements from pool, spa or ocean water that can damage and discolor hair.

3. Use a Deep Conditioner. Chlorine can cause your hair to be dry and brittle. To repair your dry hair add a deep conditioner to your hair care routine to replenish lost moisture. Our go to is the Kevin Murphy HYDRATE-ME.MASQUE. This smoothing treatment delivers hydration and moisture to dry hair, or hair that’s been exposed to harsh, dry climates. Your New Best Friend

Ok ladies, get ready to meet your new best friend…

There’s a reason why Living Proof PhD Dry Shampoo has won several awards from Allure Magazine, including “Best of Beauty” and “Reader’s Choice Breakthrough 2016.” Living Proof Dry Shampoo has seriously changed our lives! It truly lives up to its “PhD” status of “Perfect hair Day.” With this magical stuff, you can treat your lovely locks by skipping the wash and getting a couple more days out of your curls, as it removes dirt and grease from your “do.” It smells great and blends well, even with dark hair.

But how do I use dry shampoo?

No worries, we’ve got you. After shaking the can really well, position the can approximately 6 inches away from your oil spots (we like to section the hair to really get it clean and get your volume back!). Spray the amount needed and let sit for 30-60 seconds, to allow the dry shampoo to absorb all of the oil and dirt that has built up. Rub the dry shampoo with your hands or softly with a towel. Voila!

You can pick up your new bestie from either of our locations. Stay beautiful!
